THE WHOLE HOME PICTURE

What Does a Home Really Cost to Own in Des Moines?

Two houses with the same purchase price may have very different costs once you live in them. Before deciding which home is the better fit, look beyond the number on the listing and consider what the property may require after you own it.

Start with the cost of buying the home.

The initial picture can include a down payment, closing-related expenses, inspection-related expenses, and moving costs.

Then consider the cost of owning it every month.

Compare the mortgage payment with property taxes, insurance, utilities, and HOA expenses when applicable.

Look at the house itself.

Condition matters. Consider the roof, HVAC, windows, appliances, exterior, yard, age of major components, and visible deferred maintenance as part of the comparison.

Think about your everyday life in the house.

How long is the drive to work? Where will you buy groceries? Where do you spend most of your time? What will your normal week look like if you live here? Transportation cost and time are part of living in a home too, even though they do not appear on the listing sheet.

New construction and resale can have different cost patterns.

New construction may have different maintenance expectations, warranties, incentives, HOA considerations, taxes, or initial expenses than an existing home. Neither is automatically the better fit.
